Plein Air Southwest Salon 2017

Posted on

Well, it’s that time of year again…Spring…time for the Outdoor Painters Society huge annual event…Plein Air Southwest Salon 2017.

This year the venue has changed. The show is still being held in Dallas but has been moved from Southwest Gallery to its secondary location, The Artists Showplace Gallery, in North Dallas. This is a juried event and each year it becomes more competitive, therefore more difficult to make the cut. This year there were 397 entries; 201 were accepted, representing 86 artists from 19 states.

Juror of awards will be Kenn Erroll Backhaus, an eminently qualified juror and superb artist from Pennsylvania.

The exhibition’s opening reception and awards ceremony is Saturday, 8 April, 3-6 PM. Sunday, 9 April, 2-4 PM, will feature painting demonstrations by several of the Outdoor Painters Society Master Artists. The exhibition closes on 13 May. I hope you’ll come by to see the show. It’s going to be incredible.

Here are my three submissions.

First and Jefferson-Plein Air - 9.68 x 15.75 - w

“First and Jefferson” – 9.68″ x 15.75″ – Oil…This is one of the beautiful old houses in an older neighborhood of Wylie, TX. It’s approximately 4 miles from my home. I set up my easel across the street in the Baptist Church parking lot. After two consecutive mornings, at the same time, this painting became a reality. Palette used: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White.

7 31 PM - 20 x 20 - w-R

“7:31 PM” – 20″ x 20″ – Oil…This is the view looking west from the end of my driveway at precisely 7:31 PM on September 27, 2016. Of course I couldn’t paint this scene in one minute, so it was painted over several evenings. All the greens presented a challenge so I varied them with an interesting variety of mixtures. The two young boys are my grandsons. Palette used: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White.

Georgia Barn - 9.25 x 13.75- w

“Georgia Barn” – 9.5″ x 14″ – Oil…This beautiful, weathered red barn attracted my eye when out painting with my friend, Anita Elder, in Dahlonega, GA. Palette used: Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White.
