Spring has arrived, people are anxious to get outside, and artists enthusiastically head for the outdoors to paint. It’s also this time of year that the Outdoor Painters Society holds its major event of the year…Plein Air Southwest Salon.
Plein Air Southwest Salon 2015 is a juried plein air competition, show and sale hosted each April at Southwest Gallery in Dallas, Texas. The Salon features plein air paintings from many of the best painters working today.
The Salon has become one of the premier events of the Spring. The Outdoor Painters Society sponsors the event to promote an appreciation for the process of painting “en plein air” which is French for “in open air”. Most works are completed in a single painting session, painted outdoors on location and are characterized by the bold use of color, design and the freshness of paint application.
Participants selected for the show are carefully chosen by a 7 member jury panel. This year 105 artists submitted a record 326 paintings. The jury panel – after several days of review and consideration – selected 202 paintings by 82 artists representing 16 states.
My selected and accepted entries for this year’s show are seen below. If interested in purchasing one of these, please contact Southwest Gallery, 972-960-8935. Opening reception is Saturday, April 11, 2-5PM.
Juror of awards for the show will be Phil Starke, a brilliant painter. He began to show an interest in art from the time he lived in Germany as a young boy while his father was in the military. He studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Inspired by the instructors at the Academy, Starke changed course from his aim at the advertising world and developed a passion for oil painting. It was upon graduation from the American Academy of Art that he decided to plunge into the profession of fine art.
