Time for the 2019 Plein Air Convention and Expo in San Francisco is rapidly approaching. Called the Woodstock of outdoor painting, this annual event will be attended by hundreds of fanatical painters from most of the United States and parts of Europe. It’s an opportunity to make personal connections with 80-plus of the world’s top painters (convention faculty), plus many of one’s peers. It’s a time to discover some amazing painting techniques from top artists that will transform your painting skills. There will be painting demonstrations on five stages, and the opportunity to go out painting in beautiful San Francisco every day.
I will be giving a talk on Friday, 26 April, at 9:00 PM. The title of my presentation will be “The Unlimiting Limited Palette”. Here’s what I say about the presentation:
“An abundance of tube colors on the palette does not aid in making a painting more colorful. Without an understanding of each color’s properties, the results could in fact be disastrous. In John’s presentation, he will explain the benefits of using a limited palette of three primary colors, and how its use can greatly improve the quality of your paintings, simplify color mixing, and with little effort achieve color harmony. Apply the principles taught and you’ll see immediate improvement in your work.”

On Monday, 22 April, 7-9 PM, I will be sharing the story of my art journey. Hosted by the Plano Art Association, “From There to Here” is an illustrated walk through my professional career. It will be an encouraging, inspiring, informative, educational…and hopefully, even an entertaining evening as we look at where it began for me, and where I am today as an artist.
