Critique and Mentoring Programs

Purpose of the Critique/Mentoring Programs

To provide practical, honest advice, direction and encouragement to each student, helping them grow as artists in order to discover their unique creative voice.

John’s Promise:

1) I will honestly evaluate each student’s work, acknowledging strengths, and areas needing improvement.

2) I will provide clear, practical direction for improving areas of weakness.

3) I will encourage and help each student grow in understanding and confidence as they pursue their unique creative path.

Student’s Promise:

1)  I will be a serious student with a willingness to learn and apply John’s advice/direction.

2) I will receive critiques and direction without taking them personally or becoming defensive.

3) I will do assigned lessons, when required, to the best of my ability.

Modus Operandi

1) All critique and mentoring sessions will be conducted during 30-minute telephone, Facetime, or Zoom conversations. Students will email me quality JPEG images (maximum 1200 pixels, longest dimension) prior to our conversation; this will give me time to evaluate and prepare for our meeting. The quality and size of the images is important. I can only evaluate accurately if I have good images.

2) Phone conversation times will be mutually agreed upon. Students are expected to honor the 30-minute rule, be on time and observe their commitment.

3) All students entering the mentoring program must have purchased the textbook for the course:  “Limited Palette Unlimited Color”   https://lilipubsorders.com/products/limited-palette-unlimited-color-book

4) It is preferred, but not mandatory, that you purchase and study my two videos: “Limited Palette Landscapes” and “Create Unlimited Color with a Limited Palette”. These will give you a great grounding in what I teach. Scroll to the bottom of this link:

5) All critique and mentoring programs are to be paid in full prior to our meeting. Payment may be made via PayPal or personal check. There are no refunds and students are expected to take the initiative in scheduling each session; however, it is expected students will schedule sessions on a regular, consistent basis.

6) The three programs offered relate to the size of paint tubes, of which we are all familiar. Think of it like this, the larger the tube, the more you get.

7) Prices not only reflect the time we will have together but also the time I will invest preparing for our meetings.

8) These programs are available in the United States and Internationally. International mentoring sessions will be conducted via Zoom.

I am unable to accept any new students at this time.

The Programs

37 ml ProgramOne-time Critique – $85.00

A maximum of two paintings to be submitted via email (check specifications above) prior to a scheduled 30-minute phone critique. Before our time together, I will evaluate all aspects of the submitted work. The phone critique will address all areas in need of improvement and offer specific advice and direction for overcoming those shortcomings.

120 ml Program – 6 Personal Mentoring Sessions – $489.00

Required textbook: “Limited Palette Unlimited Color”. Every aspect of your submitted paintings will be analyzed…Concept, Composition, Drawing, Value, Edges, Color and Technique. I will advise and give specific direction for improving problem areas. You will be asked to apply the instruction to the work/works in question. You have the option of reworking the existing painting or completing a new one with improvements made. The intention here is for me to advise, for you to apply, and for me to check your work. The amount of work you do is up to you. The more you do, the more you will get from these six sessions.

You will be approved for a private Facebook group…Limited Palette Unlimited Color. It is only for those that have purchased the book of the same name. The purpose of the group is to give its members the opportunity to share work done while using the book and its teaching as a guide. This is a chance for all members to inspire, encourage and learn from one another. I periodically contribute helpful comments, information and instruction.

Testimonials

Tim Breaux – “After John accepted me as a student we quickly developed a routine of email correspondence, critiques, and phone conferences. John demonstrated exceptional teaching skills with direct comments about problems with my work, ideas for improvements, and advice on many of the challenges I faced. The most valuable thing John shared with me early in the process was teaching me what not to do. This allowed me to concentrate on learning the things that gave me the best shot at success as an artist.

“The instruction started with monochromatic under paintings to nail down the concept of good value structure. I was reminded often to concentrate on good value massing, proper and varied edges, correct drawing, and the rest of the basics of good painting. Now, during the drawing stage, I am constantly reminded of all the advice I received which gives me a much deeper understanding of how to design paintings up front in order to be more successful in the end. I believe my work has progressed in a way that would not have been possible without his direction.

“In John, I found a very flexible and positive advocate for living the painter’s life. I consider it an honor to have had this opportunity and I value the friendship that has developed.”

Lynn Lancaster – “I found John’s mentoring program very user friendly. John was very professional and direct. We began the program with an email from John explaining the procedure we would follow. It consisted of my providing a reference photo of the subject as well as a photo of my painting. We followed up with a phone conversation in which John discussed in depth my strengths and weaknesses. He gave me suggestions as to how I could improve and strengthen my painting. His first question was always, “What’s your center of interest?” From there, we discussed values, composition, and color. I learned to begin with a value study in raw umber which allowed me to correct composition and value before getting too far along.  My paintings have greatly improved through John’s help. I would recommend the mentoring class to artists of all skill levels.”

Alan Bloom – “I’m a beginning painter having picked up a brush just a little short of two years ago. Taking local classes and watching YouTube videos was my gateway to painting.  I first became introduced to John when he was interviewed on the Artful Painter podcast. John’s messaging about using a limited palette immediately made an impression on me. After buying his book and videos and following his virtual advice, I felt a true sense of liberation and harmony in my work!   Joining his Facebook group and connecting with other  Pototschnik “disciples” was the next step in my journey. After posting photos of some of my paintings and getting honest and constructive feedback from members of the group  as well as John, was beneficial.

“But, I wanted more specific and detailed feedback so with a bit of trepidation, I  signed up for a mentoring session with John. I say trepidation, because here I am a beginning amateur asking a world renowned artist for his help! My serious Achilles heel is mostly perspective and this is where I wanted help from John. Together we analyzed one of my paintings. Although I had read several books, watched videos and did countless exercises on perspective, I still struggled. John was able to provide clarity and easy to understand direction that caused the proverbial light bulb to immediately illuminate in my brain! The “right side of my brain” of course. Our thirty minutes on FaceTime flew by and was over way too fast. I learned much about perspective and touched upon other aspects of painting and I am so glad that I spent that time with John.

“John is on point, focused and honest which is what is necessary for true personal development. I also love his dry humor and easy going manner which immediately set me at ease. I strongly recommend a personal mentoring session with John!”

Doris Wright King – “If anyone is considering John’s mentoring program, let me just say it is worth more than you pay. You not only get helpful advice but the questions make you consider closely your personal work habits.”

Ron Bowles – “Your critique was very helpful and all your advice was very much appreciated. The way you described each element and how I could improve my painting was easy to understand and I could visualize the effects on my painting. “

Barbara Nuss – “When I discovered that John Pototschnik had mentoring sessions, I knew I had to sign up. I have admired his work for years, so I knew that one-to-one sessions with him would be critical to my growth as an artist. Submitting value sketches and color plein-air sketches which he critiqued were the crux of our FaceTime sessions. He’s very gentle in his comments and nails the problems immediately. He suggests I do my paintings first in black and white so I can focus on the value masses. I have learned new ways of looking at things and new things to think about. I highly recommend him as an expert mentor. “

Charles Marshall – “Living in Scotland, I came across John on YouTube and thought, Wow!! I bought his book and videos to learn from. I was fascinated with his work which really inspired me, especially his using just three primaries. I had to learn from him, so I emailed him and was so excited when he agreed to take me on. John took me back to the fundamentals of art…drawing, values, colour, composition…and so much more. Through his teachings, he put me on an absolutely amazing learning curve. I spent around 18 months working with John and loved every minute of it. The way he taught me how to start and plan a drawing and painting will never leave me. Thank you so much John, it’s been a fantastic journey.”
