Best use of values

Posted on

The National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society just announced its winners for its 5th Best of America Small Works National Juried Exhibition. My painting, “Transitions Series: Afternoon” – 10″ x 16″ – Acrylic/Oil, received the award for “Best Use of Values”. I had no idea there was such an award to be given at the Small Works Exhibition, but how appropriate. The whole intention for doing the painting in the first place was to demonstrate to beginning artists that it is value that establishes the mood for a painting…not color. Color only enhances the mood.  (Click images to enlarge)

When the values created for a painting clearly represent the mood you wish to create, if those values are matched when applying color, the chances of creating a successful painting are greatly increased.

Shown here are two paintings of the same subject demonstrating this truth. The first is the award winning painting, the second is one just completed and not shown previously.
